The Whigs: “Mission Control”

The Whigs; Mission Control

Album Title: Mission Control
Artist: The Whigs
Genre: Rock/Indie…Power Pop also works I guess
For Fans of: Foo Fighters, The Replacements, Nirvana

“Mission Control,” The Whigs’ sophomore album blisters with energy.  The opening track, “Like a Vibration” sends the listener into a guitar driven, distortion filled, full steam ahead frenzy.  As the album proceeds, the energy never falters, and the songs come blasting at you, one by one.  The influences are quite straightforward for this Athens, Georgia trio.  It is possible to pick out the grungy influences of bands such as Nirvana and the Replacements.  The songs are crafted in a simple, direct, yet effective manner.  They do not revolutionize any aspect of the music, but they manage to create well-crafted energetic songs, filled with hooks, and solid riffs.  The fast, technical drumming, combined with raucous guitar pumping make for some very solid rock tunes.

Rating: ★★★½☆
